Aconitum, Monkshood

Aconitum is a genus of over 250 species of flowering plants belonging to the family Ranunculaceae. These herbaceous perennial plants are chiefly native to the mountainous parts of the northern hemisphere. The most distinguishing and dangerous characteristic feature of many of this species is that they are extremely poisonous.

Symptoms may appear almost immediately and with large doses death is almost instantaneous. The initial signs are gastrointestinal including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea followed by a sensation of burning, tingling, and numbness. In severe poisonings motor weakness, slowing of heart rate occurs…. resulting in death.
